“Show leadership” asked Ireland ahead of the 28th United Nations (UN) Climate Change Conference (COP-28) in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, which begins on November 30, online publication Agriland reports on November 29.
The summit will assess progress made globally to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement and limit the rise in global temperature to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. Ireland asked to take initial control “substantial obligation” provide financing to support the recovery of countries particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change.
At COP27 in Egypt last year the creation of a global Reparations Fund was agreed, the first UN fund dedicated to combating the damage caused by climate change.
Ireland played “main role” in the deal for the fund and should play a major role in the fund’s success, said Michael O’Brien, political adviser to the Irish charity Trócaire, whose stated aim is “support long-term development projects abroad and educate the Irish people about the root causes of poverty and injustice”.
Ireland’s fair share of loss and damage funding is estimated to be at least €1.5 billion (145 billion rubles) a year between now and 2030, according to new research by Trócaire. Calling Ireland “show leadership” at COP28 and commit to funding, O’Brien emphasized that the fund is currently empty and that rich and high-emitting countries must now take the lead in filling it.
Speaking before the Joint Committee on Environment and Climate on 28 November, discussing Ireland’s priorities ahead of the UN conference, he said: “Ireland can show leadership by making a substantial initial commitment to the fund at COP28.”.
