The Election Commission of Pakistan has received two requests for further postponement of elections.

The Election Commission of Pakistan has received two requests for further postponement of elections.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) received two requests from residents of Balochistan province for a further postponement of the parliamentary elections in Pakistan, The Dawn reported on November 30.

The publication reported that the petitioners cited security concerns in the province and even snowfall in some districts as justification for postponing the elections.

“The Mekran region has seen a rise in terrorist activities, from the killing of innocent laborers to disturbing incidents such as the use of improvised explosive devices and the use of female suicide bombers.”Meena Majid, general councilor of one of the wards of Kech district, said in a statement, citing an example of the security threat in Balochistan.

The petition, citing snow problems, stated that residents in several areas would not be able to fully participate in the elections until May or “restore normal life”since snowfall limits them in winter.

However, CPI spokesperson Harun Shinwari had earlier said that the commission had started printing the final ballots and distributing them to constituencies. He called out all rumors about a new postponement of the elections. “unfounded and misleading”.

“The Election Commission has decided to engage the Digital Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) to take action against those who spread such fake news.”Shinwari said.

Let us remember that the next general elections in Pakistan are scheduled for February 8, 2024, three months behind the deadlines set by the Constitution of Pakistan. The government and parliament were dissolved in mid-August and, according to the constitution, new elections must be held no later than 90 days after the dissolution.
