The right-wing Alternative for Germany party won 27% of the vote and took the lead in the German state of Brandenburg, a sociological survey conducted by the INSA institute on November 30 for the Bild newspaper showed.
In second place are the Social Democrats, the SPD party of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, with 20%. In third place is the CDU (former Chancellor Angela Merkel’s party, now led by the unpopular Friedrich Merz).
Sarah Wagenknecht’s party, having taken votes away from the left and a bit from all other parties except the CDU, got 11%. Union 90/Greens, the party of Economy Minister Robert Habeck and Foreign Minister Annalena Bärbock, continued to fall and received only 8%.
Experts point out that, despite the AfD’s high ratings, the right currently has no chance of actually coming to power. The fact is that no other party is willing to form a coalition with the AfD and the right is still far from obtaining an absolute majority.
A serious new political force could be the still unformed party of the popular leftist politician Sarah Wagenknecht, with which coalition agreements are possible. Meanwhile, the “greens” are losing popularity and at the same time being displaced from power at the regional level.
For example, the Greens were unable to enter the government of the state of Berlin. The coalition of the Social Democrats, the Greens and the Left has collapsed and the state is now governed by the SPD and the CDU. The results of the recent elections in Hesse theoretically allow the Greens to remain in the state government, but the Social Democrats who won the elections are currently negotiating the creation of a coalition with the CDU.
