This Thursday, Parliament approved the final text that transposes into national law the 2022 European Commission directive that tightens standards aimed at preventing and controlling smoking.
The document presented by the Health Commission regarding the tobacco law proposal No. 88/XV/1 received positive votes from PS, PSD, PCP and Livre.
Chega voted against, while the Liberal Initiative and the Left Bloc abstained.
This week, Parliament only approved the introduction into Portuguese legislation of a European directive, which Portugal had to adopt urgently on pain of non-compliance.
The new tobacco law would only equate e-cigarettes with traditional tobacco, discarding the most controversial proposals such as banning the sale and consumption of tobacco near schools, at gas stations or on terraces with some lighting.
