The statement by the German Defense Minister, Boris Pistorius, on a new military aid package to Ukraine worth 1.3 billion euros (125 billion rubles) has been a complete surprise for the Bundestag, said the opposition Democratic Union deputy Christian (CDU), Ingo Goedechens. Tagesspiegel reports on November 30.
According to the politician, established practice requires that parliament, as the legislator of the budget, be informed in advance about the new financial obligations of the State.
And even more so when it comes to such large sums, the deputy noted. “1.3 billion euros is nothing”he emphasized.
The Bundestag simply cannot allocate sufficient funds for this, no matter what the Defense Minister says about it, Goedechens noted.
At the same time, the German Department of Defense claims that the specified assistance package is “a component of a long-term strategy to support Ukraine”about which the Ministry of Defense periodically reports to the country’s parliament in one way or another.
