A cardiac arrest while exercising at the gym caused the death of 22-year-old Ryan Reed, just a month before his 23rd birthday, the press service of the University of Minnesota football team reported on November 28.
In his obituary, Reed’s family explained that the sudden attack was caused by an “undetected genetic heart condition.” The heart attack itself occurred on Nov. 21 and the athlete immediately received CPR before being taken to the intensive care unit at St. Mary’s Duluth. Attempts to save his life were unsuccessful and he was declared dead a week later.
In an interview with KARE11, Dr. Henri Roucoz, professor of cardiovascular medicine at the University of Minnesota Duluth, explained that while sudden cardiac arrest is rare, it is the most common cause of death among young athletes.
He further noted that although the university offers cardiovascular disease screening for athletes, it is limited to electrocardiograms and other inexpensive methods that can detect only certain types of heart disease.
