The Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) will not punish tennis players who will participate in the Northern Palmyra Trophy tournament in St. Petersburg, the organization’s press service reported on December 1.
The WTA noted that tennis players who have signed a contract with the WTA have the right to compete in exhibition tournaments.
“Players compete on the WTA Tour as independent contractors and have the option to participate in off-season penalty-free exhibition tournaments at their discretion.”the press release says.
Let us remember that the North Palmyra Trophies tournament will be held in Saint Petersburg from December 1 to 3. Both active athletes and famous Russian tennis players who have finished their careers will attend. For example, the winners of the Grand Slam tournaments Svetlana Kuznetsova and Anastasia Myskina.
Foreign tennis players who play in the WTA and the ATP will also participate in the tournament.
We also remember that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) adopted a position diametrically opposite to that of the WTA with respect to the tournaments in Russia. The IOC has recommended athletes not to attend the Friendship Games, which will be held in Russia in September 2024.
