The impeachment trial of former President Guillermo Lasso was completed by the National Assembly of Ecuador, Cuenca High Life reports on December 1.
The Assembly concluded the process by approving a resolution alleging that the former president had misappropriated public funds in the renewal of government contracts and was responsible for the misappropriation.
On Wednesday, the newly created Assembly resumed a process that had been suspended by Lasso when he dissolved the Assembly in May with his claim of “crossed death.”
The decision to stop the trial came after a lawyer warned that Ecuador’s Constitution does not provide any grounds for censure or impeachment of a president who has left office.
The resolution, approved by 116 of the 137 votes of the Assembly, accuses Lasso of “knowing and condoning the misuse of public funds” under the Amazonas oil tanker pool contract, causing “financial damage” to the country.
Assembly member Viviana Veloz, a supporter of impeachment, acknowledged that the resolution has no legal value but said it was important for the Assembly to formally condemn Lasso’s actions.
