South Korea launched its first spy satellite

South Korea’s first spy satellite was launched this Friday by a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket in California, less than two weeks after Pyongyang launched a military reconnaissance satellite.

If successfully launched into orbit, the South Korean satellite would be required to monitor the activities of nuclear-armed North Korea.

The launch took place from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California and was broadcast live by the North American space company. The mission included other satellites from different customers.

South Korea plans to launch four additional satellites by the end of 2025 to strengthen its capabilities.

The satellite will be placed in low Earth orbit and will be capable of detecting a 30-centimeter object, South Korean news agency Yonhap reports.

After two launch failures, in May and August, North Korea said it successfully launched the Mulligyong-1 spy satellite into orbit on November 21.

Seoul said Russia technically assisted North Korea in this operation.

Pyongyang later said it could monitor key sites in the US and South Korea, but no images were released.
