Espinho Mayor Miguel Reis resigned from his mandate this Thursday.
Miguel Reis was arrested on Tuesday by the judicial police as part of Operation Whirlwind on suspicion of active corruption and economic involvement in business.
“Following the steps taken under Operation Whirlwind, I have made the decision of my own free will to immediately resign the mandate to which I was elected in the Espinho city council and therefore in the institutions. where, according to the inherent functions, autarchy was represented.
During the same operation, a municipal worker and three businessmen were also arrested. Joaquim Pinto Moreira, former mayor of Espinho and current vice president of the PSD parliamentary group, was also targeted by this operation.
At stake is the licensing issued since 2018 and the suspicion of illegal links between the architectural office, the architect and the Espinho Chamber itself.
According to cm This Thursday, members of the Porto Judicial Police carried out several surveillances that photographed meetings between Miguel Reis and businessmen from the municipality, leading the authorities to claim that the cash was delivered to pay for corrupt acts.
