Mozambican parliament president defends ‘exemplary punishment’ for domestic violence

The President of the Assembly of the Republic of Mozambique, Esperanza Bias, this Saturday defended exemplary punishment for perpetrators of crimes related to domestic violence, calling the practice “intolerable.”

“We must guarantee greater vigilance and accountability so that exemplary punishment is meted out to offenders,” Esperanza Bias said during the annual women’s forum held at the Chancery Office of Parliament.

Government data released at the event showed that between January and September, 3,923 cases of physical violence and 1,504 cases of psychological domestic violence were reported in Mozambique.

“These are alarming numbers, even if there was only one case, violence is and will always be intolerable,” he stressed.

“Premature unions and domestic violence are evils that everyone must fight by raising awareness among families, religious and community leaders, and local authorities,” added Esperanza Bias.

For her part, Minister of Gender, Children and Social Affairs Nyeleti Mondlane defended the promotion of equal rights and responsibilities for men and women, highlighting the endorsement of instruments that ensure access to basic social and economic services for women and children.
