Livre’s only deputy, Rui Tavares, believed that the CTI report demonstrated that his party was right when it argued that it was “absolutely necessary” to have a “strategic environmental assessment” to decide on a new airport, as it had more “coordinates than environmental impact studies.”
On the other hand, Rui Tavares also stressed that the report shows, “as Livre has always said,” that the option of building an airport in Montijo is “not feasible” and “a bad solution.”
“From an environmental point of view, this would be tragic for a very sensitive area, and from the point of view of future growth and the flexibility that such a choice would give our country, it was a decision with huge disadvantages,” he said.
Livre’s sole deputy also added that the methodology developed by the CTI also gives his party a reason to demonstrate that Portuguese democracy can “maturize with more instruments of public participation, with public consultations that are well attended, as was the case with the new Lisbon airport” .
“If we adapted these types of solutions to other types of current national problems, such as lithium and hydrogen problems, with the help of the famous data center in Sines, if we allowed people to participate more, everything would be more transparent and more legitimized.” , he asserted.
Rui Tavares also added that the topic of the new airport will certainly be one of the topics of the next election campaign, adding that people “will evaluate how much politicians respect or not the technical discussions carried out by CTI.”
An independent technical committee has identified Alcochete as the most advantageous solution for a new airport among two viable options, according to a report released today.
