The head of state of Mozambique, Filipe Nyusi, this Wednesday expressed condolences to the President of Tanzania, Samia Suluhu Hassan, in connection with dozens of deaths caused by heavy rains in the north of this country.
“In this moment of pain, I would like to express, on behalf of the people and government of the Republic of Mozambique and myself, our sincere condolences,” Filipe Nyusi said in a note released today by the President of Mozambique.
At least 68 people were killed in landslides caused by heavy rains in the north of the country, which borders Mozambique’s Niassa and Cabo Delgado provinces to the south, according to a report released Monday by Tanzanian authorities.
Since Saturday, rains have affected the northern Tanzania town of Katesh, about 300 kilometers north of the capital Dodoma, causing massive landslides that have leveled dozens of cars and houses.
“While we express our feelings of solidarity, we are confident that, under your wise leadership, the government and people of Tanzania will recover from this tragedy as quickly as possible,” added Filipe Nyusi.
Footage broadcast by local TV channels showed streets littered with destroyed houses, and traffic and power supplies were disrupted.
East Africa has been plagued for weeks by heavy rains and flooding linked to the El Niño weather phenomenon, which has displaced more than a million people in Somalia and led to more than 300 deaths in the region.
El Niño, usually associated with rising temperatures and drought in some parts of the world and heavy rain in others, is expected to continue into April.
