A reporter for the Brazilian television network TV Globo, who was participating in a morning show reporting on violence, was subject to an attempted robbery this Friday morning on Avenida Paulista, the financial center of the city of Sao Paulo. Juliana Massaoka was injured and the thief who was targeting her mobile phone ended up running away without taking anything as an argument between them resulted in the device falling to the floor.
An unusual situation occurred shortly before 10 am local time and 1 pm in Lisbon, when Giuliana was invited to take part in a live broadcast of Encontro com Patricia Poeta, which dealt with the topic of violence. When Juliana was already in the air, a cyclist approached her at high speed and, before she realized his intention, he pulled out the cell phone that the journalist had in one hand and was holding a microphone in the other.
Feeling the pull, Juliana grabbed the device with all her might. The TV channel security guard who was accompanying the reporter and image reporter tried to catch the thief, but the criminal managed to escape, taking advantage of the inertia with which he was already approaching.
This practice is very common in Sao Paulo, and especially on Avenida Paulista, where large corporate buildings from all over the world are located and where executives walk around with their mobile phones in their hands all day long. Men on bicycles pass the victims at high speed, snatch the devices from their hands and continue pedaling between the cars until they disappear.
The journalist remained unresponsive for several seconds, shocked and frightened by what had happened, but immediately resumed reporting on the 130th anniversary of Avenida Paulista, celebrated this Friday, but the main topic was the attempted robbery. This episode clearly demonstrated the audacity of the robbers, who, it seems, are not afraid of anyone, because there were several police officers next to the Globo team, as well as with the station security guard, but even this did not discourage the criminal.
