Spain’s transitional environment minister this Saturday denounced OPEC’s “disgusting” position after the organization called on member countries to “actively reject” any fossil fuel agreement at the COP28 climate talks.
“I think it’s pretty disgusting that OPEC countries are against setting the bar where it should be” on climate, Teresa Ribera said in Dubai, where the UN Climate Change Conference (COP28) is taking place.
Spain currently holds the presidency of the Council of the European Union twice a year.
The secretary-general of Kuwait’s Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) this week called on its 23 member and associated countries to “actively reject” any fossil fuel agreement at the COP28 climate talks in Dubai, in a letter seen by France. – Press Agency News (AFP) on Friday.
“The European Union will join many others, the vast majority of parties at this conference to ensure that we get a meaningful and productive outcome on the transition away from fossil fuels, the energy transition, while ensuring access to energy for all,” Teresa told reporters Ribera.
COP28 enters its final stage as ministers try to break the deadlock in negotiations. At the center of these negotiations is the issue of fossil fuels (coal, oil and gas), the main cause of global warming.
Canada’s environment minister, who plays a key role in the discussions, told AFP this Saturday that he is “quite confident” that fossil fuels will be mentioned in the final text.
