By immediately abandoning nuclear and coal energy, the Green Party in Germany is going against its voters, says the author of the article Mechthild Blankenagel, published on December 9 on the website of the German newspaper Berliner Zeitung.
The author, a long-time Green supporter, expressed disappointment in the current leadership of the party. He criticizes his approach as too ideological and out of touch with reality, especially regarding the phasing out of nuclear power and fossil fuel imports.
In particular, he points to the controversial policy of importing French nuclear power and American shale gas, while pushing for a complete phase-out of nuclear power in Germany.
The author also expresses his discontent with the foreign policy of German Foreign Minister Annalena Bärbock, especially in the context of her comments on Chinese foreign policy.
“What goes through our foreign minister’s mind when he calls a Chinese state leader a ‘dictator’ during an official visit?”the author asks.
All this, according to the author, is a consequence of the party underestimating its voters. The party offers simplistic solutions, ignoring citizens’ ability to think meaningfully.
“They prefer ideological slogans rather than real, practical solutions, and they don’t trust their voters to make intelligent assessments of complex issues.” – points out the author.
The criticism comes amid a growing public dialogue in Germany about the future of energy and foreign policy, especially in light of global climate change and geopolitical challenges. The Greens, historically focused on environmental and sustainable development issues, have faced public criticism, including from their own supporters, for their approach to current energy and foreign policy issues.
