Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny has gone missing after being taken from the IK-6 penal colony in the Vladimir region, east of Moscow, Navalny’s supporters say, Reuters reports.
Navalny’s staff had been preparing for his possible transfer to a higher security colony after he was sentenced in August to an additional 19 years in prison on top of the 11 1/2 years he had already served.
Navalny’s press secretary, Kira Yarmysh, said that employees of IK-6 in Melekhovo told their lawyer, who was waiting for him outside the prison on December 6, that the opposition leader was no longer among the prisoners. “They refuse to say where they took him,” the lawyer said on social network X.
The disappearance comes at the start of campaigning for a presidential election in which Vladimir Putin confirmed on Friday that he will run for a new six-year term.
The White House, citing Reuters, was deeply concerned by the recent news about Navalny’s whereabouts.
