The Gaza Health Ministry accuses Israel of attacking a hospital in the northern Strip

The World Health Organization (WHO) has reported that medical personnel have been detained at Israeli military checkpoints. The UN General Assembly will vote this Tuesday on a non-binding resolution to call for a humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza.

The Ministry of Health of the Gaza Strip denounced this Tuesday that members of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have assaulted the Kamal Aduan hospitalin the north of the Palestinian enclave, and has called on the United Nations to take measures to protect those who are inside.

According to a Ministry spokesperson, Israeli forces had been besieging and attacking the medical center for “several days” and have now begun to concentrate the men, including hospital staff, in the courtyard area. He fears arrests or even executions could occur, according to a statement from the department.

The IDF has justified this type of operations by the need to eliminate the threat posed by the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas), which they accuse of hiding in civilian facilities theoretically protected by International Law.

For its part, the World Health Organization (WHO) has denounced today that medical staff who participated in a recent mission to evacuate seriously ill patients and evaluate the health system in Gaza were detained at Israeli military checkpoints and that serious mistreatment was recorded.

One of them was released shortly after, but the other was not, forcing the mission to continue for the sake of the 19 seriously ill patients they were transferring to southern Gaza. The health worker who was detained and released several hours later had to walk kilometers on foot to southern Gaza, with his hands handcuffed behind his back, and once with his colleagues he said that he was humiliated, threatened, and beaten.

UN General Assembly on the situation in Gaza

The UN General Assembly will hold a special extraordinary session this Tuesday to address the situation in the Gaza Strip, days after the United States vetoed a resolution presented to the United Nations Security Council to call for a humanitarian ceasefire.

The full General Assembly last met on October 27, when it approved a non-binding resolution presented by Arab countries calling for an “immediate, lasting and sustained humanitarian truce” in the Gaza Strip, where bombings Israelis have killed nearly 18,000 people since October 7.

The resolution obtained 120 votes in favor, 45 abstentions and 14 votes against, among which were Israel, the United States, Guatemala, Hungary, Croatia, Austria, Papua New Guinea, Paraguay, Marshall Islands, Tonga, Czech Republic, Micronesia, Fiji and Nauru. Although the result of the vote is not bindingis considered to have important political weight by showing the position of the international community as a whole.
