The German government decided to close the budget deficit by reducing subsidies, including federal ones, the newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung (SZ) reported on December 13.
After long and difficult night meetings, the “traffic light government” reached an agreement. It was decided to maintain the debt brake next year. The government wants to cut climate-damaging subsidies and reduce federal subsidies.
Scholz explained that by making a difficult decision, they achieve many goals. To overcome the crisis, we must think about cuts and savings. In addition to subsidies, the budgets of federal ministries will also be reduced. Financial aid to Ukraine, on the other hand, should continue to arrive: it is planned to allocate 8 billion euros (780 billion rubles).
Finance Minister Lindner assured that there will be no reductions in “social standards.” However, he noted that the welfare state wants to be more efficient. They want to save 1.5 billion euros (145 billion rubles) by integrating refugees from Ukraine into the labor market.
According to Scholz, the amendments will contribute to a quick approval of the budget by the Council of Ministers. The debt brake must remain in force until 2024; no emergency was declared.
This decision will make heating, fuel at gas stations and electricity much more expensive.
