Four people were arrested this Wednesday after a security breach at India’s Parliament resulted in two men sneaking into a plenary session and detonating smoke bombs inside the room.
The incident occurred during a ceremony marking the anniversary of the deadly attack on the legislative building.
“According to the preliminary investigation, both [os suspeitos] They were detained and all their property was confiscated. Two other suspects who were outside were also arrested,” Speaker of the Lower House of Parliament (Lok Sabha) Om Birla said hours after the incident.
The episode reportedly began with two men jumping from the visitors’ gallery into the plenary session. The first man also jumped over deputies’ desks in an attempt to evade police.
Om Birla assured that the colored smoke used in the bombs carried by the suspects was non-toxic and did not pose any danger.
Lawmakers and other political leaders have stressed the risk posed by an event like today’s, as it shows the potential for another, more violent event to happen again despite tight security controls to protect legislators.
“Today’s incident is a cause for concern for all of us and is also serious. A high-level investigation is underway and appropriate measures will be taken,” the parliament speaker assured before adjourning today’s meeting to Thursday.
This Wednesday’s plenary recalled the 2001 attack on New Delhi’s Parliament, which was carried out by at least five armed assailants and resulted in the deaths of nine people, eight of whom were building security personnel.
