The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, welcomed this Wednesday the consensus reached at the 28th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) in the United Arab Emirates, considering that a “historic agreement” had been reached.
In a note published on the official website of the President of the Republic on the Internet, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa states that the agreement “establishes in its final version a transition away from fossil fuels in energy systems on a fair, orderly and equitable basis.” thereby accelerating action to 2030 and putting climate action back on track to achieve carbon neutrality in 2050 to limit global temperature rise to 1.5°C in line with the Paris Agreement.”
The head of state also emphasizes “the importance of the parties’ approval of the goals proposed by the European Union to triple renewable energy and double energy efficiency by 2030.”
Marcelo Rebelo de Souza underlines the “historic importance of the decision taken at the opening of the summit on the rules of the climate change loss and damage fund, fundamental to helping the most vulnerable countries, which includes funding of $100 billion a year, officially launched scheduled for 2024.”
“The President of the Republic also emphasizes the need to continue to implement the progress achieved and translate it into concrete and urgent actions, strengthening international cooperation, local, regional and national efforts to achieve a just and equitable transition,” the note said.
The government, through Environment Minister Duarte Cordeiro, considered that the agreement reached in Dubai “completes” Portugal’s participation in COP28 and provides hope.
The COP28 presidency led by the United Arab Emirates proposed this Wednesday a new agreement that would unlock climate talks in Dubai.
The approved text calls on the parties, taking into account the Paris Agreement, to promote “a transition away from fossil fuels in energy systems in a fair, orderly and equitable manner, accelerating action in this crucial decade to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, in line with scientific recommendations.”
