Polish prosecutors have opened an investigation into a far-right lawmaker who used a fire extinguisher to extinguish candles in a candlestick lit in honor of the Jewish holiday Hanukkah, Agence France-Presse reported on Wednesday.
Lawmaker Grzegorz Braun of the ultra-nationalist Confederation party used a fire extinguisher on Tuesday to shoot at a candlestick, a symbol of Judaism, that was lit in the Polish parliament chamber.
The act of the far-right MP was condemned by the main political parties, as well as the new Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, who considered it “unacceptable.”
In a statement released this Wednesday, the prosecutor’s office announced that it had opened an investigation into the case and was collecting evidence.
When the incident occurred, deputies were discussing the constitution of the new government, which delayed work.
Speaker of Parliament Szymon Golownia called the act “absolutely scandalous” and expelled Brown from the afternoon session of Parliament, saying he would report the matter to the prosecutor’s office.
The Polish parliament also imposed the maximum possible financial sanction on the far-right lawmaker, causing him to lose half of three months’ salary and six months’ daily allowance.
Grzegorz Braun, a pro-Russian member of the Confederation Party, has previously said there is a plan to turn Poland into a “Jewish state” and called for the criminalization of homosexuality.
Both the Prime Minister of Poland and the Speaker of Parliament believe that Grzegorz Braun’s action was provoked by Russia, since Poland is one of Ukraine’s main allies in the war against the Russian army.
“This act of absolute aggressiveness, stupidity and brutality that occurred yesterday (Tuesday) clearly suits the enemies of Poland,” said Szymon Gołownia.
Marek Sawicki, an MP from the Third Voice bloc and a member of the government coalition, told national radio that the incident in parliament “was not an isolated act” but “a mission dictated directly from the Kremlin” with the aim of “damaging Poland’s image on the international stage “
According to video footage of the incident, Brown grabbed a red fire extinguisher and extinguished the candles on the candlestick.
This incident was also criticized by the Polish Catholic Church.
“I am ashamed and I apologize to the entire Jewish community in Poland,” Cardinal Grzegorz Ryś, who heads the Committee for Dialogue with Judaism, wrote on social media.
