Israa Jabis is 38 years old and has returned home after spending the last six years in prison in Israel. She says she was arrested for a crime she didn’t commit and is now finding some of her biggest difficulties adjusting to everyday life. She has third-degree burns on 60% of her body and is missing eight fingers due to an incident she suffered in 2015 for which she was accused.
The Palestinian was one of the women released under the agreement between Israel and Hamas. Two weeks ago he had the opportunity to see his family again. Despite his happiness, he does not hide the difficulties he faces due to his physical condition. “I live in a constant state of pain,” he said. Al Jazeera.
The woman cannot raise her arms and has difficulty breathing.
More serious consequences for Israa came from an accident followed by a car bombing in Jebel Mukaber in Jerusalem in 2015.
Israel believes the woman deliberately caused the explosion, charging her with attempted murder and sentencing her to 11 years in prison.
When she was detained, Israa was completely dependent and survived thanks to the help of other prisoners. She says the solidarity of the female community during her time in prison gave her hope for the future.
“The girls in prison gave me the strength to continue. A smile helped a lot, a smile gives hope and makes you forget all the pain. Their presence made me feel that Moatasem [o filho] was all around me,” he said.
Currently outside of prison, Israa is trying to get the medical care she needs to improve her quality of life.
