Six people from the same family are believed to have died from food poisoning after eating mushrooms, a typical African dish, in the Mozambican region of Milange in Zambezia, a local health official told Luse this Wednesday.
The case occurred on the 7th after a family of seven, three of whom were children, ate corn mushroom and cassava leaves, said Isaias Marcos, chief medical officer of Zambezia province.
After eating, the seven family members “began to feel unwell, with vomiting, weakness, difficulty breathing, loss of consciousness and fainting,” the head physician said.
Three people died soon after, and “the remaining four victims were hospitalized, three of whom died within 24 hours,” Isaias Marcos added, noting that “only the head of the family survived.”
Zambezia’s chief doctor believes the death was due to food poisoning, but says samples have been sent to the National Laboratory of Hygiene, Water and Food in Maputo to determine the true causes.
