The President of the Order of Physicians considered this Thursday “strange the rumor” that was launched that a disciplinary process is underway against António Lacerda Sales, assuring that “there is no process and there was never any intention to exist” against the former ruler. .
“A process has begun in the case of the twins, during which the scientific and technical contours, the contours of respect for the Leges Artis are being explored. [de acordo com as regras]. Now this rumor has been launched and is being used, from my point of view, to divert attention from the most important thing, namely finding out the truth in this case,” Carlos Cortes told Lusa.
The President reacted to the statements of the former Minister of Health, António Lacerda Sales, in which he expressed in a statement sent to the Lusa agency his “total disagreement with the untold interference of the President of the Order. Doctors involved in the activities of the government came to declare to the press who ordered the opening of an investigation or inquiry in the Disciplinary council “to apparently evaluate doctors,” including the former health minister.”
According to Carlos Cortes, in recent days “a clique has been created in which several people have spoken on this topic, not based on any truth.”
“At this time, no investigation, disciplinary or otherwise, is being conducted against Dr. Lacerda Sales,” he said, stressing that “there is no interference of the Order of Physicians with the activities of another sovereign power.”
“The basis falls apart because this process that is being discussed against Dr. Antonio Sales is an invention, it does not exist,” he insisted.
Carlos Cortez said that as a doctor, Lacerda Sales “knows full well” that if a disciplinary process by the Medical Association is initiated, he will be notified.
“Now he was not notified, or if he was, then that he submitted this notification,” he said, emphasizing that “there are no complaints or any instructions from the Medical Association,” and his name was never not mentioned: “It’s a lie.”
The President said this on Tuesday when he told the press that he had asked the Disciplinary Council of the Southern Region to evaluate the conduct of the doctors involved in the case of the Portuguese-Brazilian twins to understand whether there was a disciplinary issue on which he could intervene, he sent a clarification that neither against which doctor disciplinary proceedings were not initiated.
However, he said that on Monday he sent to the Disciplinary Council “a request for an investigation to determine whether there is sufficient evidence of a pattern of disciplinary misconduct among doctors engaged not only in clinical activities, but throughout their activities.” decision-making at different levels” in the case of twins treated for spinal muscular atrophy at the Santa Maria Hospital.
In statements to Lusa this Thursday, Carlos Cortés also stated that the Order of Physicians does not have the competence to evaluate the behavior of political interference.
“People obviously enjoy individual freedom, and the purpose of the Medical Association is not and has never been to interfere with what has been the political interference of this leader or any other leader or the current Minister of Health,” he assured.
Carlos Cortes said he had already informed Health Minister Manuel Pizarro that the information was “not true.”
In November, TVI published the case of two twins living in Brazil who have since acquired Portuguese citizenship and came to Portugal in 2019 to receive the drug Zolgensma for spinal muscular atrophy, at a total cost of four million euros.
Marcelo Rebelo de Souza, who has already submitted documentation on this matter to the PGR and confirmed that his son Nuno Rebelo de Souza contacted him about the need for treatment for the children, denies any interference in the process.
The case is being investigated by the General Prosecutor’s Office (PGR) and the General Inspectorate of Medical Activities (IGAS).
