“Funding is guaranteed until January. Now we will work on the instrument that was proposed to be created to ensure predictability and stability,” António Costa said at a press conference following a two-day meeting of the European Council. in Brussels.
The European Council was unable to reach unanimity on the issue of allocating approximately 50 billion euros to Ukraine, discussed as part of the revision of the EU’s multi-year financial program, because of Hungary.
“It was very clear that if an agreement was reached at 26, support would not be at stake. […]They will not stop supporting Ukraine,” the prime minister said.
António Costa argued that at least Budapest did not block the “most important decision”, namely the start of negotiations with Ukraine on EU membership.
“Naturally, there are times when each member state has its own interests,” the prime minister said, praising Viktor Orbán’s decision to go “for coffee” while the other 26 leaders decided on expansion.
The European Council decided on Thursday to begin formal negotiations on accession to the European Union (EU) with Ukraine and Moldova, the institute’s president said, speaking in a “clear sign of hope” for the countries.
“The European Council has decided to open accession negotiations for Ukraine and Moldova,” Charles Michel announced in a post on the social network X (formerly Twitter) after hours of discussions between heads of government and EU states on Thursday, Friday and today at the European summit in Brussels , a meeting marked by Hungarian threats to veto decisions like the one now known.
For the President of the European Council, this was “a clear sign of hope for the citizens of these countries and the entire European continent.”
Charles Michel’s spokesman later told the press in Brussels that “the European Council made a decision and no one challenged it” after Hungary threatened to veto the decision to open formal negotiations with Ukraine over concerns about corruption in the country.
In a post on social network X, the President of the European Council indicated that the heads of government and EU states also decided to “grant Georgia candidate status.”
“The EU will begin negotiations with Bosnia and Herzegovina as soon as the necessary degree of fulfillment of accession criteria has been achieved, and has invited the European Commission [Europeia] submit a report by March with a view to making such a decision,” said Charles Michel.
