The three hostages, who were mistakenly killed by the Israel Defense Forces, were shirtless during the attack and were holding a makeshift white flag. Samer Talalka, 25, Yotam Haim, 28, and Alon Shamriz, 26, were mistakenly identified as a threat and were ultimately shot and killed. The incident occurred in an intense war zone where Hamas members operate in civilian clothes and use tactics to confuse the Israeli army.
A soldier who saw the hostages thought they were Hamas members and opened fire. Two died immediately, the third was wounded, but managed to escape into the building, where he screamed for help in Hebrew. The soldiers thought it was a trap and shot him. Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu expressed condolences to the families of the victims and expressed “deep sadness” over this “unbearable tragedy.”
“We had so many hopes, so many expectations that he would come back to us,” said cousin Samer al-Talalqi.
The 25-year-old’s funeral took place yesterday and was attended by about 300 people in Hura in southern Israel.
