A 76-year-old woman was left homeless after a fire in her house in Pegarinhos, Alijo, early this Sunday morning. The flame emerged from the burning fireplace.
At 13:00 the woman left the house, leaving the fireplace lit and a blanket drying. There was a sofa and firewood nearby, which quickly spread the fire throughout the room.
A village resident noticed the flames and alerted the Alijo fire station, which was 20 meters away. Operators prevented the fire from spreading to neighboring houses.
The one-room house was partially destroyed inside, but without living conditions. The woman was left homeless and was picked up by her brother living in the village.
Carmen Pinto, president of the Junta de Pegariños, and the Alijo city council will meet with the elderly woman and her family on Monday to assess the condition of the house so that she “can return as quickly as possible.”
