Two men, aged 32 and 44, died when a car and a nine-seater van collided with farm workers on Monday morning at Estrada Nacional 387 in Cuba, Beja district.
The dead were agricultural workers. The 32-year-old man has Romanian citizenship, and the 44-year-old has Moldovan citizenship.
The accident also resulted in two serious injuries and eight minor injuries. Seriously injured, according to Cuban fire chief Jose Galinha, were two men, ages 62 and 48, who, like the fatal victims, were traveling in a nine-passenger van.
Jose Galinha said two women, ages 41 and 37, and six men, ages 26, 18, 36, 22, 45 and 34, were slightly injured.
The victims, according to the fire commander, are seven Moldovan citizens, three Portuguese and two Romanians.
The alarm was raised around 6:44 a.m.
The EN387 motorway connecting Vidigueira to Ferreira do Alentejo was closed to traffic but reopened at around 10:50.
The victims were taken to Beja Hospital. The cause of the accident could have been poorly calculated overtaking.
Firefighters from Beja, Cuba and Vidigueira, VMER from Beja and Évora and GNR were called to the scene. A total of 29 operators are working on site, supported by 14 vehicles.
