President Lula da Silva, who was the subject of several corruption charges between 2016 and 2020, was convicted and spent 580 days in prison, said this Monday that the ministry cannot treat all politicians as corrupt and should not put forward, according to him, unfounded accusations. under pressure from the press. Lula, who at certain moments seemed to be talking about himself, made these statements at the inauguration of the new Attorney General of the Republic PGR, Paulo Gonet, in Brasilia.
“The concept has been created in society that any accusation against any politician is already true, and this is not always true. There was a time, here in this country, when the accusations in the newspaper headlines spoke louder than the proceedings “… Many times. Any accusations should not be allowed to be made public until it has been determined whether they are true, because otherwise the people already convicted,” Lula told an audience of current and former State Ministry prosecutors, several of whom were involved in the investigations that led to their conviction and imprisonment.
Lula da Silva, convicted in 2017 of corruption by then Operation Lava Hato judge Sergio Moro, now a senator, was arrested on his orders in April 2018 and released at the end of 2019 by decision of the Federal Supreme Court STF. The court found that Moro was not a judge with jurisdiction to hear the cases for which Lula was sent to prison, and overturned all actions that led to the release of the current president of the country.
STF judges overturned Lula’s trials and convictions on procedural issues deemed unlawful and concluded that Moro acted in a biased manner without delving into the veteran politician’s guilt or innocence. However, Lula, a shrewd and experienced politician, claims that the judges dropped the charges against him, which is not true.
“Often a person is destroyed before he is given a chance to defend himself. The only thing I ask of you, for the sake of what you will represent from now on in the history of this country, is that you have only one concern: to ensure that the truth and only the truth prevails over any other interests. Frivolous accusations do not strengthen democracy, they do not strengthen institutions.” – said Lula, directly addressing the new prosecutor general.
