At least 22 people died this Thursday in the northwest Democratic Republic of the Congo after a boat crashed on the Lulonga River, while authorities point to 145 missing, local sources say.
“It was a convoy of four motor canoes that capsized with goods. There were goats, sacks of corn, sheep, as well as a large number of passengers,” said Otis Evoloko, a journalist and director of the local radio station Bomoko, who participated in the action. Rescue operation., quotes the Spanish news agency EFE.
The incident occurred around 02:00 local time (01:00 Lisbon) between the cities of Venga and Likvelo, which are part of the territory of Bolomba and the province of Ecuador. The canoe column, which left the city of Basankusu, was heading towards Irangi, on the border with the Republic of the Congo (Brazzaville).
