English footballer Anton Walkes, who played for North American Charlotte FC, died on Thursday at the age of 25 as a result of a boat crash in the Miami area, the club said.
The former Tottenham and Portsmouth defender was killed in a collision between two boats and was found unconscious in one of them. He was nevertheless taken to the hospital, but the attempt to resuscitate was in vain.
The footballer was driving one of the boats involved in the accident, in which it is not yet known if there are any more victims.
“He was a wonderful son, father, partner and teammate whose carefree approach to life touched everyone he met,” said Charlotte FC owner David Tepper.
Wax joined Charlotte in his debut MLS season in 2022, starting 21 of 23 games last season, scoring five goals.
