In a recording shared with Israeli soldiers, Iris Haim said the army was not responsible for the death of her 28-year-old son. “No one in our family judges you. It’s not your fault, it’s Hamas’ fault,” the audio message can be heard.
On December 15, the IDF mistook Alon Shamriz, Samar Fuad Talalka, and Yotam Haim for Hamas members and shot them to death. The shooting took place in an area of intense fighting in the Gaza Strip, where elements of the Islamic group operate in civilian clothes and use deception tactics.
“They probably did the right thing at that moment. (…) Don’t hesitate for a moment if you see a terrorist. Don’t think that you killed the hostage on purpose. You need to protect yourself, because this is the only way to protect us,” said Yotam Chaim’s mother.
An Israeli army dog camera recorded the cries for help of Alon Shamriz, another hostage killed by mistake. The investigation into the case continues. The Israel Defense Forces took responsibility for the deaths of the hostages.
