Gauze and disinfectant are all that Palestinian surgeon Bashir al-Hourani has to work with at Gaza’s central school, where he helps run a field clinic that treats wounded people forced out of overwhelmed hospitals.
“We had nothing left. This patient was supposed to be in the hospital, but due to overcrowding he was transferred to a field hospital,” he says. Reuters when treating a patient with a surgical scar on the torso.
“We have dozens of such patients. We have children who are difficult to treat. We change the dressings one day, and the next day we discover an infection, because there is no sterilization, there are no specialized places. There are no trash bags,” he said.
Al-Sayed Khadija School is located in Deir el-Balah, in the center of a small Palestinian enclave that was bombed by Israeli forces.
