Mozambique’s National Criminal Investigation Service (Sernik) said on Wednesday that an Angolan man detained in Mozambique for international drug trafficking will be extradited to his country.
“Administrative procedures are now underway to extradite the same person. As soon as everything is organized, he will be extradited,” said Luse Hilario Lole, Sernic’s representative in the city of Maputo.
The 51-year-old was arrested on Thursday in Maputo, the capital of Mozambique, after fleeing his country in September 2019, where he was serving his last sentence in 2017.
According to Mozambican police, the Angolan man was serving a prison sentence of more than 10 years for committing the crime of international drug trafficking in Angola.
During his arrest, the man presented several false identification documents, including from Mozambique, Brazil, Namibia and the Seychelles, with different names from those in Angola and, in other cases, a different photograph.
The action could also constitute a “practice of document falsification,” Cernick warned in a memo distributed Tuesday.
“This is a sign that the Mozambican authorities are attentive to all movements of citizens who intend to use the country as a refuge, as well as citizens who become involved in the world of crime,” concluded Sernik’s representative.
