A member of the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) fatally shot a motorcycle taxi driver in the province of Manica, in the center of the country, on Saturday, a corporation spokesman said this Wednesday.
The victim, 24, allegedly disobeyed a stop order during a police check, Mateus Mindu, a PRM spokesman in Manica, told the media.
“We received anonymous complaints about a group that was riding a motorcycle and stealing some goods, in particular cell phones,” he explained.
Authorities said a team from the provincial command had been set up to look into the case, the second time a civilian has died in a police operation in the province this year.
“And since this was not our intention, a team was created at the provincial command level to assess the actual circumstances under which the incident occurred and take subsequent action,” the PRM representative concluded.
