Amanda Richmond, 45, a mother of four, disappeared Saturday into an icy river in Alaska while swimming to try to save her drowning dog, reports Daily mail.
The woman was walking with her husband Brian Rogers north of Anchorage and their dog Groot when he fell through a small hole in the ice on the river. The husband explains that Amanda immediately jumped into the water.
“She didn’t rush to save ‘just a dog,’ but a family member,” Rogers said. “She works as a nurse in the emergency department and was trained to help and save people. She was completely focused on saving the dog, and before I could grab her, I saw her floating downstream under the ice and disappearing,” Amanda’s husband said.
Alaska State Police and the Search, Rescue and Dive Recovery Team have been assisting in the search since the alarm was raised early Saturday morning.
However, some rescuers had to call off the search on Tuesday after equipment froze due to bad Arctic weather. The search, which resumed this Wednesday, will involve underwater drones and specialized rescue dogs.
The dog has not yet been found, according to authorities.
