The President of the Board of the General Assembly of Santa Clara, Eduardo Medeiros, announced this Wednesday the club’s intention to change its emblem in order to give the Reds of Ponta Delgada an emblem with its own “identity”.
At a press conference held at the club’s headquarters, Eduardo Medeiros stressed the need to adopt an emblem that would reflect the “identity” of the Azores and the “history of the club.”
One of the reasons why they are in favor of changing the emblem is due to the strong resemblance to the Benfica emblem.
“Some members and fans have had difficulty seeing themselves in the Santa Clara symbol. This creates confusion, even from the point of view of the Industrial Property Code, with the symbol of another club. [Benfica]. For some time Santa Clara has identified itself with a particular club, but this does not mean that it does not have members in a number of other clubs. Santa Clara must have its own identity,” he emphasized.
A public competition will run until January 31, during which proposals can be submitted for a new emblem, which will serve as a “unique symbol of the club and the Garden.”
“The approved symbol will belong to the SAD itself. There is no point in having a SAD with one logo and a club with another when the name is the same. In fact, they know about our initiative and share the same ideals as us,” he said.
The final decision on the emblem will be made and voted on later by members of the General Assembly.
