The government of Argentina’s new President Javier Miley on Wednesday sent to the National Congress a bill to declare an economic and financial emergency in Argentina by the end of 2025.
The initiative involves the delegation of functions of the executive branch in connection with the declaration of “a state of emergency in economic, financial, tax, pension, security, defense, tariffs, energy, health, administrative and social issues until December 31, 2025,” the draft indicates.
The so-called bill “Foundations and starting points for the freedom of Argentines” declares a state of emergency until December 31, 2025, a period that can be extended by the executive for another two years, that is, until the end of Milea’s term of office. , who took office as president on December 10.
The government says the project is being promoted “in the spirit of restoring economic and social order based on the liberal doctrine embodied in the National Constitution of 1853.”
Miley, whose far-right La Libertad Avanza party has a minority representation in parliament, already signed a decree last week on the need and urgency of economic deregulation, including the repeal of several laws, which has sparked protests and court complaints.
The bill introduced this Wednesday includes, among other things, reform of election rules, changes to the Criminal Code to control street demonstrations and executive powers to privatize state-owned companies.
