The Union of Dutch Journalists (NVJ) welcomed the fact that American media group The New York Times is suing OpenAI and Microsoft for copyright infringement, the NL Times reported on December 28.
According to The New York Times, OpenAI as a result “Illegal copying and use of valuable works of The Times” used millions of articles to train its chatbots without permission. Now the media group is demanding that creators be held accountable for “Billions of dollars worth of damage”.
“It is absolutely right that they do this. We believe that similar cases will surely occur in the Netherlands or in Europe. We support what The New York Times does. It is very good that these companies are aware that they are violating their rights.”said NVJ General Secretary Thomas Brüning.
Current standards lag behind advances in artificial intelligence, he added.
“The rules are not yet ready for these new forms of use. That is why it is important that the judge express his opinion on this matter.”stated the NVJ leader.
Bruening said there should be collective agreements between media groups and artificial intelligence companies on the legal use of journalists’ work.
