Romania and Bulgaria will join the Schengen area from 2024, the agency reported BBC.
Austria has given the green light for the two countries to enter the borderless space by air and sea, removing barriers it had erected to expansion motivated by concerns about illegal immigration. The dialogue will continue at land borders.
The Schengen area currently covers 4.3 million square kilometers and is home to 423 million citizens from 27 European countries, 23 EU members and four non-EU countries: Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein. In the EU, only Bulgaria, Romania, Ireland and Cyprus are not yet included in this group.
Romania and Bulgaria joined the European Union in 2007.
