Peru has closed tourist attraction Machu Picchu, the Inca citadel, due to the crisis that has gripped the country since December, the government announced this Saturday.
In a statement, the Ministry of Culture justifies the closure of the Inca trails and the citadel, built in the 15th century, by “the social situation” and “preserving the safety of visitors.”
The railroad that can take you to the site was shut down for several days due to damage caused by demonstrators.
At least 400 tourists, including 300 foreigners, are stranded near a tourist attraction in Aguas Calientes.
Others decided, as an alternative, to walk a few hours to Piscacucho, the closest village to Machu Picchu, connected to the road network.
Violent protests have been taking place in Peru since December after President Dina Boluarte (former Vice President) took over as head of state following the removal by Congress of then-President Pedro Castillo, accused of attempting a coup d’état by declaring the disintegration of this body.
Since December 7, protests have killed at least 59 people and injured hundreds.
