The President of the German Parliament (Bundestag), Berbel Bas, this Saturday defended the revival of the Franco-German alliance, which she called “the engine of Europe.”
“I very much hope that Franco-German relations will be given a new impetus by the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the Élysée Treaty, during which there will be a meeting between the two governments and parliaments,” Berbel Bas told Agence France-Presse (AFP).
The Social Democrat also classified the two countries on the eve of the celebration of the treaty as “the engine of Europe”, despite recent disagreements.
French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz will discuss topics such as the price of gas, nuclear energy or defense.
The two countries have been in conflict since Scholz took over from Angela Merkel in December 2021.
“The strength of Franco-German relations lies in the fact that they turn the differences between the two countries into progress towards Europe,” said the chairman of the Bundestag.
In the same interview, Bas also stated that Europe must be able to demonstrate “international action and restore security together”.
On the other hand, he said Member States must remain in solidarity with Ukraine, providing additional support in close coordination with partners.
According to the Bundestag, about 120 German parliamentarians are expected to attend the celebrations in Paris.
