This Sunday, Mozambican police banned the release of fireworks and pyrotechnic devices on New Year’s Eve in nine areas of Cabo Delgado province affected by terrorist attacks, citing security concerns.
In the remaining eight districts of this province in northern Mozambique, fireworks are only allowed in tourist areas and party areas, five minutes before midnight and ten minutes after midnight, according to a police source.
According to local press reports, police say the decision is for security reasons only, but sources contacted by Lusa also report an increase in activity from terrorist groups operating in the province in recent weeks.
