Formation of ‘severe’ tropical storm Alvaro worries Mozambique

The Mozambican National Institute of Meteorology (Inam) issued a safety alert this Monday due to the formation of “severe” tropical storm Alvaro in the Mozambique Channel, recommending precautionary measures for maritime traffic.

The storm is producing maximum wind speeds of 95 kilometers per hour and gusts of up to 130 kilometers per hour, but “does not pose a threat to mainland Mozambique,” according to the warning.

“This weather system is moving toward the coast of Madagascar at 17 kilometers per hour,” the warning said, warning of the possibility of strong winds and rain, as well as severe thunderstorms.

The same warning, in effect until January 2, recommends maritime safety and precautions.

Following this notification, the National Maritime Institute (Inamar) issued a warning to shipping agents, shipowners, public fisheries councils, maritime carriers’ associations, owners of passenger, cargo, pleasure and fishing vessels, as well as the population living in the coastal zone, due to the risks associated with strong winds.

It is required to “follow maritime safety procedures”, namely “not to go to sea during the period when this phenomenon is attacking the Mozambique Channel.”

The call, among other measures, also includes placing vessels in safe areas and strengthening mooring lines and fenders.
