The 46-year-old Peruvian man was found near the Costa do Norte beach in the municipality of Sines on Monday morning after he disappeared into the sea during his first dive of the year with friends.
According to the National Maritime Authority (ANM), the alarm was raised at 8:20 am.
Searches at the site were launched using the vessel of the Sines Rescue Station, as well as members of the local command of the Sines Marine Police and the Sines Volunteer Firefighters.
Rescuers still carried out some resuscitation measures, but they were unable to reverse the situation.
INEM pronounced him dead at the holiday port of Sines and the body was taken to the Medico-Legal Office of Alentejo Litoral by the volunteer firefighters of Sines.
The Sines Marine Police claimed responsibility for the incident.
