2023 was the second hottest year in the UK

2023 was the second warmest year on record in the United Kingdom, according to preliminary data released Tuesday by the country’s National Weather Service, Phys.org reported Jan. 2.

The average temperature was higher than in any year since 1884 except 2022, according to the Met Office. Wales and Northern Ireland, two of the four countries that make up the United Kingdom, experienced their warmest years on record for the second year in a row.

“Climate change is affecting long-term UK temperature recordssaid Met Office senior scientist Mike Kendon. — What we have seen in recent decades is a series of high temperature records. “We expect this trend to continue as our climate continues to change in the coming years as a result of human-caused climate change.”.

Last June was the hottest June ever recorded in the UK, causing water levels to fall in places such as Woodhead Reservoir in central England. The EU’s climate change watchdog, Copernicus, said last month that 2023 would be the world’s hottest year ever recorded.

Environmental activists said that all temperature records are associated exclusively with human activity on Earth. Thus, the political affairs director of Greenpeace (an organization recognized as undesirable in the Russian Federation) of Great Britain, Doug Parr, stated that “Climate alarms are ringing”and accused British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak of not being bold enough in his policy.

Recall that last year Sunak announced the relaxation of a series of measures aimed at achieving zero carbon emissions by 2050, as well as allowing new oil and gas drilling in the North Sea.
