Three Chinese nationals have been arrested on suspicion of the death of a compatriot in Nampula province in northern Mozambique over an alleged debt of more than 700,000 meticais (10,000 euros), Mozambique police said on Tuesday.
The incident occurred on Sunday at a restaurant in the province, said Rosa Chauk, spokesperson for the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) in Nampula, during a press conference.
According to the police, the victim “pulled out a weapon in an attempt to defend himself,” but the assailants managed to neutralize him and attack him over an alleged debt of 700,000 metises concluded with one of the assailants, now detained. .
The victim was “urgently taken to the hospital,” but due to his injuries, “he died yesterday morning.” [segunda-feira]”, said Rose Chauk.
The attackers tried to escape and then bribed the Nampula provincial police chief with 100,000 metikay (€1,431) to avoid being apprehended, a police spokesman said.
Rose Chauk said the case would follow “legal procedures,” asking the public not to take justice into their own hands.
“And people who have a license to use and carry weapons use them responsibly,” he further urged.
