Employment in Germany has reached its highest level since reunification in 1990, averaging 45.9 million employees in 2023, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) said on Tuesday.
The number of people released exceeds the record set in 2022 by 330 thousand people.
According to Destatis, this evolution is justified, among other things, by labor immigration.
On the other hand, there has been an increase in the labor market participation of the population already in the country.
“These two impulses were stronger than the effect of demographic changes, which in the medium term would lead to a clear decline in the working-age population,” the statistics office said.
In 2020, the crisis caused by the Covid-19 pandemic caused a decrease in employment by 361 thousand people.
The following year, employment increased by 0.2% (69 thousand people).
In 2023, the growth was 1.4% (612 thousand people).
