Exiled Bangladeshi opposition leader Tariq Rahman this Thursday condemned to France-Presse (AFP) the country’s “rigged elections” next Sunday, which he said are designed to keep the prime minister in power.
Rahman is the scion of one of the country’s two major political dynasties (the other is led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina) and has led the largest opposition party, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), since the arrest in 2018 of his mother, Khaleda Zia, a two-time prime minister.
In his first interview with a major Western media outlet in several years, the 56-year-old political leader said his party would not participate in the vote, the outcome of which he claims is predetermined.
